There’s a topic in your relationship that never gets raised. Not because it’s resolved.

Every couple has at least one of these.

A topic that sits just below the surface. Not unresolved exactly — more like permanently suspended. It comes close to the surface occasionally. Then something happens and it drops back down.

Not because anyone decided it was off-limits. Because someone learned, at some point, not to raise it.

This is how a veto works when it has no official status.

Nobody voted on it. Nobody announced it. But every time the topic got close to being discussed, something happened — a door closed, a voice changed, a face went somewhere else. The cost of continuing felt higher than the cost of dropping it. So the person who wasn’t reacting learned the lesson quietly. Without ever being told.

And here’s the thing about that kind of veto: it doesn’t even need to be used anymore. Its existence is enough.

Once one person has learned that a topic carries a cost, they stop calling the vote. The topic gets quietly removed from the agenda. Permanently. By what looks like mutual agreement — except it isn’t really mutual. One person has the veto. The other stopped proposing things it might apply to.

What doesn’t get said in a relationship shapes it as much as what does.

The unraised topic doesn’t disappear. It gets managed around. Conversations navigate away from it instinctively. The person who stopped raising it carries the awareness of what they’re not saying. That weight is present even when the topic isn’t.

The veto usually isn’t about the topic itself. It’s about what the reaction to the topic might mean — what it might trigger, what might happen next, what it might cost to go there. The reaction becomes the subject. The original topic becomes secondary.

Which means the thing that never gets raised is often the thing that most needs to be.

If there were no cost to raising it — no reaction to manage, no fallout to navigate — is there something you’d actually want to bring up?
